Skin cancer is characterized by abnormal growth of cells within the skin. It most often occurs on skin exposed to the sun but can also form on areas that are not exposed to sunlight. There are three major types of skin cancer known as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.
At Face Forward Houston, Dr. Bender expertly performs surgical reconstruction for skin cancer defects. Surgical reconstruction is often needed to restore form and function after skin cancer removal on the face.
Dr. Bender usually teams up with a Mohs surgeon who performs the excision while she performs the following reconstruction. This is typically performed in the same day! In some cases, Dr. Bender is able to perform the excision as well.
Mohs micrographic surgery allows the surgeon to remove the skin cancer and examine 360 degrees surrounding the cancer to ensure that all cancer cells are removed. Because of this, Mohs has a very high cure rate and allows the patient to keep as much healthy skin as possible. This is important on an area like the face as we want to have as many reconstruction options available as possible. Dr. Bender can recommend a trained Mohs surgeon for your excision.
Dr. Bender most commonly treats skin cancers on the nose, lip and near the eye but is an expert on all areas of the face for reconstruction.
In addition to surgical excision, skin cancer may also be treated with cryotherapy, chemotherapy, radiation, photodynamic therapy or immunotherapy.
