Medical Therapy

Hair loss is a progressive condition that can affect many aspects of a patient’s life. We are fortunate to have multiple treatment options that help decrease further loss, maintain and thicken existing hair, and potentially regrow hair. Medical therapy is the only therapy that combats the underlying reason for hair loss and therefore can substantially slow its progression.

Medical therapy will start with a consultation that includes a discussion of your history and a thorough examination of your scalp and hair follicles. Additional tests may be needed to determine the underlying reason for your hair loss.

Once we have a diagnosis, Dr. Bender will work to develop a personalized treatment plan for you. This can include surgical and non-surgical options. It also may include multiple therapies that target hair loss in different ways to work to optimize your result as much as possible. Medical therapy can include topical medications that can be applied directly to the scalp, oral medications and customized compounded medications. Dr. Bender will discuss all potential options with you and determine which regimen is best based on your history and lifestyle.

Following up is an important part of the process as it takes time for medical therapy to take effect, but it’s benefit is long-lasting. Dr. Bender will continue to follow you to make sure you are on the best regimen possible and can adjust your regimen depending on results or any lifestyle changes.

FAQs

  • Do I need medical therapy prior to undergoing a transplant surgery?

Medical therapy is not needed prior to undergoing a hair transplant surgery, but it can be helpful to strengthen or increase donor hair before the procedure. It can also work well with surgery to optimize your result.

  • Why is medical therapy important?

Medical therapy targets the underlying reason for hair loss. Although transplant surgery provides the fastest result for balding and hair thinning, it does not address the individual reason for why a patient is losing their hair. Medical therapy will work to combat the cause so that the hair loss process can slow or even reverse.
