We provide comprehensive ear care at Face Forward Houston. Although it is common to come into our office for hearing or ear infections, we are also able to provide ear piercing, earlobe repair, earlobe reduction and even otoplasty for protruding ears.
Protruding ears can be a cause for concern at all ages. It can prevent someone from wearing their hair back and it can also be a source of teasing for children in school. An otoplasty is a surgical procedure to pin ears back. Otoplasty in Houston, Texas reshapes the ear by either creating missing folds or bringing the ear closer to the head.
Otoplasty can be done in either the office under local anesthesia or at a surgery center under IV sedation. A hidden incision is made behind the ear which allows the cartilage to be reshaped using both sculpting and suturing techniques.
Our earlobes can thin and elongate over time. An earlobe reduction is a quick procedure performed in the office to shorten an elongated earlobe. The ears will need to be re-pierced after this procedure.
An otoplasty, or ear pinning, is commonly performed in adults at any age, as long as the patient is healthy. For children, typically they should be at least 5 years of age.
The hearing mechanism lies in the middle ear. The middle and inner ear transmit sound waves to the brain. This type of ear surgery focuses only on the external portion of the ear which only helps to propagate sound waves into the ear. Therefore, this type of surgery will not change hearing for the patient.
This is most commonly performed on older patients as earlobes can become larger over time due to aging and from heavy earrings. This procedure is commonly performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift.
Ear surgery can often be performed under local anesthesia. For kids, it is common to use IV sedation for ear surgery.

We are happy to provide ear piercing services for all ages. We have both topical and injectable numbing to make this process as comfortable as possible.
A torn earlobe can be congenital, or more commonly from trauma or heavy earring use, and can be repaired easily in the office. Great care is taken to create a strong closure, and after adequate healing time, your ear can be re-pierced again.
As we age, our earlobes can lengthen and appear disproportionately large or wrinkled. Earlobe reduction will reduce the size of the earlobes and strategically place incisions in natural creases to optimize the cosmetic appearance. This procedure can be performed by itself or in conjunction with other surgical procedures.
Repair of a stretched or torn earlobe is typically performed in the office using local anesthesia. The edges are typically freshened to create new, healthy tissue edges, and tissue is also rotated behind the ear to strengthen the closure. Multiple layers of suture are used to make this closure as strong as possible. Sutures are removed one week after surgery. Re-piercing can be performed six-12 weeks after the repair.
An earlobe repair can fix an earlobe that has been stretched or torn from an accident, heavy earrings or even from gauged earrings. Earrings can also get caught on clothing and get stretched. It is very common that patients don’t realize that there is a simple in-office procedure to fix this. Come see Dr. Bender to see if you are a candidate!
An earlobe repair can have a high risk of recurrence. Dr. Bender will re-pierce the ears following repair at the appropriate time and will choose a location away from the area of the scar. Piercing in the scar increases the chance of having another torn of split earlobe. Cosmetic irregularities are also possible after re-shaping the ear. It is recommended to work with a facial plastic surgeon who has experience with many types of ear surgery for this procedure.
Earlobe reduction surgery can be performed in the office under local anesthesia. The incisions are measured and marked in order to remove appropriate tissue on both sides. The procedure is then performed with no discomfort and incisions are hidden in natural creases. Dr. Bender can give recommendations on how best to care for the incisions in order to minimize scarring.
In addition to standard lobe piercing, we can perform ear piercing for several areas of the ear. Popular ear piercing types include: industrial, helix, forward helix, daith, rook, tragus, upper lobe, transverse lobe, anti-tragus, orbital, snug and inner/outer conch.
