Cosmetic Excision

A cosmetic excision is a minor procedure to remove unwanted skin lesions while also maintaining a focus on restoring even skin tone and texture. This process allows for complete and immediate removal of skin conditions such as moles, skin tags, cysts, lipomas, etc. Dr. Bender will work with each patient in the recovery period to optimize their result as much as possible.

Excision

An excision involves a surgical technique to remove the skin lesion. There is minimal downtime with this quick in-office procedure. Results are visible immediately but will improve as the area heals.

Shave

A shave involves removal of skin lesions from the dermis and epidermis without needing sutures or stitches. This must be done carefully in order to minimize scarring as much as possible. These procedures are very quick in-office procedures and heal more quickly than a full thickness excision.

Cyst

A cyst is a fluid-filled lump, usually containing skin cells and keratin, that occurs under the top layer of the skin. Cysts can enlarge over time or become painful or inflamed or even infected. A cyst removal is a minimally-invasive procedure that can be performed to remove the entire cyst including its outer lining. This is performed in the office under local anesthesia with the goal of restoring your skin to a smooth and even surface.

Mole

A mole is a common skin growth that involves melanocytes or pigment producing cells. A mole on the face or neck can sometimes cause irritation when shaving or with our clothes or it can just be in a location that is not cosmetically pleasing. Removal is an option for these skin lesions. A shave excision or full thickness excision can both be options although one might be recommended for certain lesions over others. If you have a mole that bothers you, please come see Dr. Bender to discuss your options. Removals are done as a quick in-office procedure and Dr. Bender will work diligently with you to optimize the result in your recovery period.

Lipoma removal

A lipoma is a benign collection of fat cells that occur between the skin and muscle layer. Some people can have a genetic predisposition to them and they usually occur spontaneously although there can sometimes be a remote history of trauma in the area. These can be noticeable as they appear to cause bumps in our skin. A cosmetic removal is an option for these lesions. Removal will involve a simple incision done in the office under local anesthesia. The area will flatten immediately following your procedure and Dr. Bender will work with you on postoperative care to ensure your incision heals as inconspicuously as possible.

FAQ

  • What happens during the recovery period?

During the recovery period, Dr. Bender will advise you how best to clean and take care of your incision. Once you are ready, Dr. Bender will discuss the best options to minimize scarring as much as possible and will work with each patient to obtain the optimal cosmetic result.

  • Will there be a scar following my excision?

Any procedure that involves a full thickness excision will have a scar, but physicians, like a facial plastic surgeon, have been trained in techniques to promote optimal wound healing and in techniques to hide scars as much as possible. If this is a concern, it is important to see a physician that has this additional training when addressing an unwanted skin growth.
